Elderberry Syrup Shot
My favorite immune-boosting cold and flu remedy, that actually tastes good!
About This Elderberry Syrup Recipe
I first learned of elderberry syrup about 5 years ago from my neighbor. It seemed like everybody was sick with a cold that could not be shaken. Enter elderberry syrup…
My neighbor whipped up a huge batch, bottled it up, and gifted us a jar. At the time I had never heard of this syrup. It’s an intense purple, almost black, and looks a bit ominous; but since we were sick and tired of being sick and tired, we popped that jar open and took a shot.
To our surprise it was delicious! Not only that but it worked. We took a shot morning and night and in no time we were feeling much better.
Now that we know and understand the seemingly magical powers of elderberry syrup we keep it on hand and in stock as our standard go-to remedy. If we feel the slightest nose sniffle, throat tickle, or body ache we immediately reach for the elderberry syrup. Pair it with this Hell Fire recipe and you have a powerful duo.
The syrup will keep in the fridge for quite a while but you can also extend its life and even make it shelf-stable by adding 1 cup of alcohol. I have not personally tried this yet but I have my very first elderberry-brandy tincture soaking as we speak. I will let you know how that goes in a future post!

Ingredients
- 1 cup dry elderberry
- 4 cups water
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 10-15 whole cloves
- 3 thumbs of ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder (optional)
- 1/2 cup – 1 cup honey – more honey will make it sweeter and preserve the syrup longer
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Add elderberries, water, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger to a pot. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 45 minutes.
2. Stir from time to time and keep an eye on your liquid level and feel free to add a little water if needed. You do not want the liquid to dry up.
3. Remove from the heat and let cool.
4. Remove the cinnamon sticks and strain the liquid into a bowl using a fine strainer, cheesecloth, or nut bag.
